If you’re researching breast augmentation in Spring or The Woodlands, TX, chances are you have questions—and plenty of them. From implant options and fat transfer to recovery, risks, and long-term results, the consultation is the most important step in your breast augmentation journey.

At Integrated Aesthetics, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Young Cho believes an informed patient is an empowered patient. This guide walks you through what’s typically discussed during a breast augmentation consultation, so you can feel confident, prepared, and aligned with your goals.

What Is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure designed to enhance the size, shape, or fullness of the breasts. It can be performed using:

The right approach depends on your anatomy, lifestyle, and aesthetic goals. Some patients want a subtle enhancement, while others desire a more dramatic increase in size—both are valid, and both require a customized plan.

Understanding the Risks of Breast Augmentation

All surgical procedures carry some degree of risk, and breast augmentation is no exception. One of the most discussed implant-related risks is capsular contracture.

What Is Capsular Contracture?

Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue that naturally forms around a breast implant tightens and hardens. This immune response can lead to:

  • Increased firmness
  • Discomfort
  • Changes in breast shape or symmetry

Capsular contracture can occur at any time, even years after surgery. Choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon and understanding long-term implant care are critical steps in minimizing risk.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

You may be an ideal candidate if you:

  • Like your natural breast shape but want more volume
  • Have lost fullness after pregnancy or weight loss
  • Want to correct breast asymmetry
  • Are bothered by sagging or drooping breasts

Different goals require different solutions:

A personalized consultation and physical exam with Dr. Cho are essential to determine the safest and most effective plan.

Breast Augmentation Incision Options

Incision placement depends on implant size, type, and your anatomy. Options may include:

  • Under the breast fold (inframammary) – most common
  • Around the areola – depends on the areola size
  • In the armpit crease (transaxillary) – incision hidden from the breast

For fat transfer breast augmentation, small access points (about 1–2 inches) are used to harvest and place fat.

Can Breast Asymmetry Be Corrected?

Yes. Breast asymmetry is extremely common—most women have natural differences in size, shape, or nipple position.

Breast augmentation can address asymmetry by:

  • Using different implant sizes
  • Adjusting implant placement
  • Performing a lift on one breast
  • Correcting nipple position

The goal is balance and harmony, not unrealistic perfection.

Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation: No Implants Required

For patients who want a natural enhancement without implants, fat grafting is an excellent option.

What to know:

  • Typically increases existing breast size by up to about 50 percent
  • Requires enough donor fat from another part of the body, such as the abdomen, and healthy breast tissue
  • Fat survival depends on the blood supply

For patients seeking additional volume, multiple fat transfer sessions can be performed gradually.

Important: Transferred fat behaves like your natural fat; weight gain or loss can affect breast size over time.

Breast Augmentation Before or After Pregnancy

When considering breast augmentation before or after pregnancy, timing plays an important role. If you know you’re planning to become pregnant within the next year, Dr. Cho generally recommends waiting to have surgery.

However, if your plans for children are further in the future or uncertain, breast augmentation can safely be performed beforehand and does not interfere with the ability to breastfeed, as implants are placed beneath the breast tissue.

It’s also important to understand that not all women can breastfeed, even if they’ve never had breast surgery. For those who already have implants and later become pregnant, natural changes may occur, including breast enlargement, areola changes, stretch marks, or post-pregnancy deflation.

Life After Breast Implants: Removal & Revision Options

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. If you decide to have them removed in the future, it’s important to understand what to expect.

After implant removal:

  • Breasts may appear deflated
  • Larger implants may result in more loose skin

Many patients choose to combine removal with:

  • A breast lift
  • Fat grafting to maintain volume

Saline vs. Silicone Breast Implants: Understanding the Differences

Both saline and silicone implants are man-made shells filled with fluid or gel, and both can rupture.

Saline Implants

  • Filled with sterile saltwater
  • If ruptured, saline is absorbed by the body
  • Noticeable deflation occurs quickly (often within a day)

Silicone Implants

  • Filled with cohesive, gel-like silicone
  • Ruptures are often “silent”
  • Detected via MRI or ultrasound

Other Considerations

  • Capsule formation: Scar tissue can thicken over time, causing firmness or distortion
  • Infection: May require implant removal
  • Implant shifting: Can occur if the pocket stretches, allowing implants to move downward or outward
