An Overview of Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation or labiaplasty is a relatively minor procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia with conscious sedation and only takes about an hour or two to complete.

The term vaginal rejuvenation encompasses several different procedures that enhance the function or appearance of the vagina, and we’ll work with you during your consultation to determine which procedures are right for you and your goals.

Your vaginal rejuvenation treatments may consist of surgical or nonsurgical options, and will be designed to improve your sexual function and/or the appearance of your inner or outer vagina.

Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation

There are several surgical vaginal rejuvenation procedures for the inner and outer vagina, and Dr. Cho will be happy to help you explore them during your consultation.

Inner Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginoplasty surgery tightens the vaginal canal when it becomes loose after childbirth or from the normal aging process.
Perineoplasty surgery repairs the area of skin that is often injured from an episiotomy or tearing during childbirth.
Hymenoplasty or “revirginization” is designed to reconstruct the hymen. The procedure is often sought by women from cultures that place a very high value on a woman’s virginity before marriage.

Outer Vaginal Rejuvenation

Labiaplasty is performed on the inner lips of the vulva. The procedure is one of the most popular vaginal rejuvenation techniques, where extra tissue is trimmed away to relieve discomfort and improve the appearance of the genitalia.
Labia Augmentation with a Fat Transfer or labia puffing is used to create a more youthful look by enhancing the labia. The procedure harvests fat from another area of the body and then injects the fat evenly to combat sagging skin and wrinkling.
Labia majora reduction is performed to reduce some of the excess labial skin as an alternative to or in conjuction with labia augmentation or labiaplasty.
Clitoral Hood Reduction is commonly performed along with a labiaplasty, where the clitoral hood is reduced in size for enhanced sexual pleasure.
Monsplasty, also referred to as a “pubic lift,” is a surgical procedure to reduce the mound of skin in the pubic area. It is commonly performed on patients who have lost weight.

Recovery After Vaginal Rejuvenation

Most patients are able to return to work and resume normal daily activities within one week of their vaginal rejuvenation procedure. You may be only mildly uncomfortable for about a week following surgery, and temporary swelling and bruising will be mostly resolved by the third week.

Applying cold compresses for the first few days after surgery will help minimize swelling. More strenuous physical activity, including swimming and sexual intercourse, can typically be resumed within three to six weeks. Dr. Cho will advise you on how long to restrict your activity based on your unique needs.

During your follow-up visits, which are usually scheduled for the first week after surgery and three months later, Dr. Cho will check your healing progress. He will address any concerns you have, although very few complications occur and most patients are very satisfied with their results after undergoing vaginal rejuvenation.
